On the way to Eugene

There is a road from Bend to Eugene that I highly recommend.  We drove through miles of nothing but lava rock.  It was awesome.

Yes that's 10 feet of lava rock we're driving through

Bend smells like cat piss

Funny story actually…

Emad and I walk out of our motel room and we both look at each other and go, “EW do you smell that?!”  We thought a cat had pissed near our room.  We drove the car downtown and the smell was there too.  So we’re thinking that a cat had pissed on my car.  I’m freaking out at this point because I don’t want my car to smell like one of the worst, hardest to get rid of smells.  We began to walk away and we can STILL smell it two blocks later.  I’m like okay, is it really my car, am I crazy or does Bend actually smell like cat piss everywhere?  All around town all night we keep getting whiffs of the stench.  I’m thinking it’s some kind of plant blooming in the area that actually smells like that.  Or Emad and I are crazy.  Not sure but it made our trip to Bend completely unforgettable.

Ewwww....

Ewwww....Do you smell that?

Butts everywhere

Well, Buttes actually.  In the Cascade Mountain Range, most of the mountains were formed by volcanic activity and many are called Buttes.  But I think it’s funnier to call the buttes butts.  Anyway, here I am at Lava Butt….e, outside of Bend, OR.  The natural stuff around the town is super close and is just breath taking.   We walked through the lava field and drove to the top of lava butt.  We also visited a lava cave.  I learned something new.  Apparently when lava flows it creates pipelines where the outside cools but the inside flows through and eventually empties.  That’s what Emad and I were hiking through.  It was amazing.  The acoustics were somewhat like a cathedral because of the high ceilings.  Emad and I sang renditions of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and it sounded just like we were at church.

Hanging out downtown in Bend on a Friday night, we decided to head over to the Deschutes Brewery. I noticed that there were a large proportion of cars that had a) Kayaks b) Bicycles or c) General Roof Racks on their cars.  It was a Friday Night, people.  As I walked on, I noticed there were also many outdooor performance clothing stores.  I documented the findings as best I could.  Yep, Bend is a white town. Sorry the pictures are so dark.  It was night after all.

My car. The Native People had no idea know I was not one of them. Unless they looked at my license plate, of course.

Voted best bathroom by Janene

I’ve had to use all sorts of restrooms on this trips for all sorts of necessary human functions.  Some have been rather unpleasant experiences.  However, there are two bathrooms voted best by Janene.

#1 Starbucks in Bend, OR (pictured here)

#2 Raley’s Gas Station in Sacramento, CA (not pictured) <–this one was so good, I recommended it to Emad who originally hadn’t planned on it.  He enjoyed it!

I've never met a Starbucks bathroom that I didn't like!

I rated these bathrooms a 10 on overall cleanliness, bowl sittablity and smell factor.  Both of these had the green light to go ahead and poop it up!  Congratulations to Starbucks and Raleys!
